LENT FELLOWSHIP STARTING THIS COMING WEEK

Our Lent Fellowships this year will take on a new dimension in so much as there will be no ‘lecture’ or ‘sermon’ but a few conversational points which it is anticipated will stimulate some interesting discussion.  It is amazing, as we shall discover, what God’s plans are for each of us as individuals, as well as a Fellowship.  I do so hope you will make every effort to join us since this is where real fellowship blossoms especially over a  cup of tea and a biscuit!! (Gerald has prepared to lead every week as originally it was envisaged Michael would be incapacitated due to his operation - now postponed.) Please speak Rosemary if you require transport to the venue.

Protect O Lord your people and keep them safe as they relocate pro-tem.        Amen.

SHOE BOXES FOR SAMARITANS PURSE - Please bring your boxes to church next week as shipment is imminent and June needs to deliver them for onward transmission.  Thank you.

RETREAT AT HIGH LEIGH - The theme of the Retreat this year was ‘The Spread of Christianity’ This was against the backdrop of the Christian Church marking the 500th year of the Reformation.  We looked too at our own fellowships in the context of spreading the gospel and listening to the Lord, particularly relevant as we look to our own future here at  St Francis.  The speakers were excellent but as usual, the ‘star of the show’ was probably Father Mark recounting the children’s activities - with their help as you can see from the pics - he has a wonderful gift of bringing his words alive in his art work.  The music from Bishop Paul and Matthew was very special too - ooooh for our own musicians!!  As for the talent competition, good job not many people were around when M, & G & R ‘did their bit’!!

WOMENS WORLD DAY OF PRAYER: Our Fellowship was well represented at this event on Friday afternoon at St Peters. The Day of Prayer actually began while we slept on Thursday night, when the sun rose over Samoa and the first service took place.  We were then part of a great wave of prayer which would continue around the world until the last service was held as the can Samoa. An estimated 3 million men, women and young people in 170 countries/islands prayed with and for the people of the Philippines. In the British Isles alone some 6000 services were held. Rosemary was one of the readers in our service so it was good to participate, along with the other Shoreham churches, in such an occasion. REPORT ON THE DEMONSTRATION

I was very thankful that six of us were present for the demonstration, not least because Graham our demonstrator had come all the way from Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.  The apparatus lived up to expectations and apart from Douglas, I think we were duly impressed.  The good news is that we can purchase an ex-demo for £1500, saving us something in the region of £800, so we need to raise some funds. We have about £600 towards it already so if you think you can help, please speak to me.   Vicar

Unfortunately we have two sad news items:

We have learnt that our friend and sister in Christ, Mrs Barbara Wilson, passed away recently. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. Barbara was a lovely lady, she will be sorely missed by all in the Free Church of England. Our prayers are with Revd Robert Wilson and the family at this time.

Another friend and sister in Christ, Mrs Pam Avery, passed away on Thursday 5th Jan. May she also rest in peace and rise in glory. Nearly all of us here had the pleasure of knowing Pam for many years. She was a kind, gentle and just a lovely lady. Our prayers are with Eric, Ellie, Geoff and the all family at this time.

DEANERY PRAYER CYCLE

We are asked this week to pray for:

  • Our twinned churches of St Andrews, Willenhall and St Martins, France;
  • Holy Trinity Oswaldtwistle

PRAYER:   We pray for those still looking for you, we ask you find them too.  We thank you that we have found you, and belong to you.    AMEN.

TODAY’S READINGS:  As per our weekly sheet: Jesus, the hope of the nations, is shown to the world.

THE HYMNAL PLUS: As you will have seen from earlier news sheets, we decided to pursue the above player of Church Music and HYMNS.  The player holds some 2800 hymns, whereas we only have 150 at our disposal currently.  This new system means we can select hymns at the touch of a button, change the tempo and even the instrumentation if we needed to.  We are hoping to have a demonstration on Sunday 22nd January at our Café Church spot.  Your PCC decided to put aside a figure of £500 to pay an annual honorarium for a part-time organist. However, despite weeks of advertising, we have not attracted a single interest.  We are proposing therefore to put the £500 towards the purchase price of a Hymnal Plus.  They are very expensive.  With the two designated offerings and the £500, we have to date £622.00, so we have a long way to go.  Please do pray God will bless us.  Our worship will be very much uplifted by good music and sound.    Vicar

EPIPHANY PARTY - Soft jazz playing in the background, subdued lighting and warmed mulberry wine greeted those who came to our Epiphany Party on Friday evening.  There were eighteen of us in all, including our two delightful children Lola and Casey.  We enjoyed some nibbles – mini pizzas, pork pie, quiche, prawn parcels, scotch egg, Christmas cake, mincepies etc etc – and then listened to Michael’s Epiphany poem before testing our knowledge with our Epiphany quiz and (belated) Christmas Quiz.   A good evening:  thank you everybody, especially June who organised the catering.    Vicar

OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS: Ros King 14th, Joan Goacher 15th, Douglas Raine 21st

St Francis of Assisi was born in 1182. As a youth he entertained illusions of grandeur and aspired to be a knight in shining armour.  At the age of 23, however, he experienced a conversion of heart. Whilst visiting the tumbledown ruins of St Damiano Church on the outskirts of Assisi, he heard a voice that said “ Repair my Church”.  Francis responded literally to the command but later realised it had much wider implications for the spiritual rebuilding of the universal Christian church, then in need of urgent renewal and reawakening.  Just as it does and needs today.

St Francis is our Patron Saint.  Thanks be to God for his life and example.

BIRTHDAYS ……….Renee Robinson 24th September

THE JOINT CLERGY CONFERENCE, SWANWICK DERBYSHIRE, 12-14 SEPTEMBER

Michael and I attended this three-day conference at Swanwick (a round trip of 324 miles). It was an enriching experience. We were saddened in the pastoral session to learn that Fr’s Adam Scholes, David Craven and Rob Desics were all off on extended sick leave, due to the pressure of Parish ministry. Please pray for them and their families. Under the programme title of ‘Who Are We?’ we looked at our Bishop Primus’s new book ‘Anglican Ecclesiology and the Gospel’ which will be on sale next month.   Can’t wait to buy my copy!  Our next session was to follow up the recommendations that came from the group discussions at Convocation and later we were assigned actions to carry out, so these matters would become a reality. We looked at ‘How to Equip the Clergy, Recruit, Train, and Offer Them a Parish’; at the possibility of creating a modern liturgy for Holy Communion and a new clergy handbook. The Primus also gave us an update on GAFCON, ANCA, and Sranton, TAC (you can ask us what these abbreviations mean but basically they are groups of church men who formed into groups because of their discomfiture with the Church of England).   After breakfast each morning we said morning prayer- I led on Tuesday.  Fr Gerald.

BEETLE DRIVE Thank you all who organised this fun evening: Glen & June who planned the Beetle Drive and sorted out all that was required to play; Alex who ordered and collected the fish & chips with Tony, and everybody else who played their part. It was a hugely enjoyable evening - 30 of us were drawing some very peculiar looking beetles and even winning prizes for doing so!  Financially, we did see a very small profit of £13 which in fact would have been a loss if it hadn’t been for a last minute donation from a kind curate, mentioning no names!!!!
